London

Wherever she goes trouble follows
Where she calls home trouble will be there.
I was a boy of maybe sixteen summers,
I didn’t know what I know now.
People are bad.
I pledged my heart beneath the weeping willows,
Beside the lake where the black swans swim,
The very next day I jumped a plane to London,
In the hope that I could make myself a name.
CHORUS:
Well, I love London and London loves me…
I was the kid they called the ‘Young Sparrow’,
Out chasing crumbs of bread, I was quickly consumed,
I lost my way in the “Wheel and Barrow”,
I lost my wallet and my mind, and someone stole my shoes…
CHORUS
It took me years; I never found my fortune,
I sold my soul; it never bought me fame,
When I came home not a soul was waiting,
I was a ghost in my own town,
No one knew my name.
I found myself by the Black Swan river,
I saw my hands as they began to fade,
Well, I loved London and London loved me,
I fell away from the world that held me
I loved London and London loved me.
I spoke to a swan by the weeping willows,
She sang her song of love, for me and me alone,
Of how she once loved a boy, she called the ‘The Young Sparrow’,
But he died in London, many years ago…

Teak Veneer
04:00
|
|||
We had a language all our own, and we’d speak it at night
when we’d talk on the tel-e-phone, eyes closed
Head thrown back and twisting the red red cord
through our fingers like it meant something..
And it meant something..
Teak veneer,
Wood-panelled afternoons in the rumpus room with the TV screaming
Teak veneer,
Hides a multitude of ugly sins, with its toothy grin,
if you run, I can meet you there.
We found a place they couldn’t find, on a kitchen bench,
hidden in plain sight, as the
Screen-door slams, I'm hanging on each breath you breathed
really hoping that it meant something,
And it meant something..
Teak veneer,
Angry voices from the upstairs room hurts the tender gloom in your seaside mansion.
Teak veneer,
You wave your hands and the sunlight danced in the motes of dust on the
on the tips of your fingers.
All that we need to do is fall asleep,
All that we need to do is fall asleep,
In that room or sweet dismembered trees
Now I walk along the empty streets, raging at the sky,
kicking at the falling leaves, half stoned,
Almost lost, and wondering if the whole damn thing
ever really meant something,
‘cos it meant something to me.
Teak veneer,
Wood-panelled afternoons in the rumpus room with the TV screaming
Teak veneer,
Hides a multitude of ugly sins, with its toothy grin,
if you run, I can meet you there.
We had a language all our own.

The Lion (and The Lamb)
03:37
|
|||
CHORUS:
Darling, don’t give up on me yet,
I know that I am just a man,
Day is coming,
You wont regret it,
It will be here soon.
Oh the lion starved in winter,
He promised to keep you warm and fed
How he failed to deliver,
The warmth, the trust, the milk, the bread.
Now that lion lives in exile,
For his pride and his mistakes,
You deserved somebody better,
Not this shuffling disgrace…
CHORUS
That fox was always cunning,
Always watching as we slept,
When I was lost to frost that winter,
The Fox, he crept into our bed.
He turned your head with all his stories,
Spun your sad rags into silk,
He won the bellies of our children,
With warm wine and buttermilk.
CHORUS
Oh, please say that you’ll forgive me,
Oh, please say you’ll take me back,
I am, to you, so softly tethered,
The path to you is the well-worn track.

Stone Crows
04:20
|
|||
Stone crows guard this yard
To see that nothing here gets stolen
Their eyes are hand-carved, marble hard
And they cannot be moved
When I tell them I am here to steal you
Dark dogs never sleep
They watch and roam the grounds
They raise alarms with razor teeth
Tonight they make no sound
When I tell them to hold you
Angels here they know their place
They keep their cold wings folded
But even they try to fly away
And lift into the sky
When I tell them I am here to wake you
To wake you up and take you out
Over these gates that no-one ever climbs
To find what we lost
West of Whitehorse
To see the aurora
You're dressed in that summer dress
Your arms out-stretched to stop the bus
To stop the bus again
Icy roads, morning frost
Jesus Christ on his plastic cross
Sliding back and forth across the dashboard
Waiting for the car to stop
Tell them I am here to steal you
Tell them I am here to hold you
Tell them I am here to wake you
To wake you up and take you home
Stone Crows guard this yard

Unloved
03:51
|
|||
Oh, my poor heart, where have you gone?
Shake loose the dust from this bag of bones,
I waited for so long,
Now the hour is drawing near,
Now the only thing to fear, well,
It’s like you said, before you left…
Ooh, you don’t matter to anyone anymore,
You’re a broken machine…
Oh, my poor hands, See how they shake,
Your words left a mark, What more do you crave?
I’ve had about as much as I can take,
Caught in wells of spite,
Watching moths across the skies.
They’re drawn towards the brighter lights.
Ooh, you don’t matter to anyone anymore,
You’re a broken machine…
Hide in your hotel room,
With the curtains drawn,
Writing all your dumb songs,
Are you feeling unloved,
Are you feeling unloved,
Are you feeling unloved…
Oh my poor heart where have you gone?
